Rockies Place Three On N.L. All-Star Team

Posted by Mike Rice

Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki and outfielder Carlos Gonzalez were voted as starters on the National League All-Star team and Rockies outfielder Michael Cuddyer was selected as a National League reserve on Saturday.

Carlos Gonzalez and Troy Tulowitzki are the first pair of Rockies teammates to earn fan-elected starting assignments…the last time the Rockies had three All-Star representatives was in 2003.

This is Tulowitzki’s first career fan-elected and third trip to the Mid-Summer Classic…he was an All-Star in 2010 and 2011…he is the fourth consecutive different NL shortstop to earn the starting nod…despite being on the disabled list, Tulowitzki continues to lead all Major League shortstops in average (.345), home runs (16), RBI (51) on-base percentage (.413) and slugging (.636).

This will be Gonzalez’s second career All-Star Game appearance and start…he batted leadoff for the National League in 2012 as their designated hitter (manager selected) and went 0-for-2…this season CarGo leads the NL in a number of offensive categories: 1st in runs (65), home runs (23), slugging (.605) and extra-base hits (50), and 4th in RBI (62)…in addition, he leads all outfielders in RBI, ranks T2nd in hits (97), 4th in triples (6), T5th in doubles (21) and 5th in average (.300)…with this election, he becomes just the third Rockies outfielder to earn a fan election, joining Dante Bichette (1996) and Larry Walker (1997-99).

This is the second time Michael Cuddyer has been named to an All-Star Game…in 2011 when he was with Minnesota, he was named an American League reserve as an outfielder and entered the game in the seventh as a first baseman…this year, Cuddy has batted .342 (88-for-257) with 17 doubles, a triple, 15 home runs, 52 RBI and 42 runs…he leads the NL in on-base + slugging  (.991) and ranks 2nd in average (.342) and slugging (.591).
